It is a sexually transmitted disease.

It is caused by a virus known as Herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 2.The other strain of the virus HSV 1 causes lesions in mouth,face,cornea and perianal region in both the sexes.

Clinical features:
There are eruptions which are small round vesicular in character. These come in groups on the skin of the labia, Clitoris, Introitus, and the mucosa of the cervix. These vesicles soon breakdown and form multiple erosions on the affected surface.

If secondary infection sets in these erosions then there is enlargement and tenderness of the inguinal lymph nodes. There is severe itching, burning and pain in the affected area.

. Virus is grown in the tissue culture
. Presence of antibodies to HSV type 2 virus is suggestive of the disease

The newborn can contract the infection from the mother it can lead to meningitis.
It is incriminated in the causative factors of cervical carcinoma.
